The Sunny Six is a bi-monthly feature of six of my favorite items. These items are essential to my well being as a wife, mother, grad student, human, nerd, and whatever else I feel like being that day. With summer, a new baby, and moving soon, my energy level and productivity level is SUUUUPER low. The house isn’t going to pack itself. The kids aren’t going to take care of themselves. Am I tired? Ab.so.freaking.lutley. Should I give myself a break since I just got a baby cut out of me? Um, Yes. But I can’t and I’m not going to because there are too many things to do and not enough time or hands around the house to help get them done. So here are six TOTALLY superficial things so I can actually get stuff done.
Invest in a good planner. Some people bullet journal, others swear by the Erin Condren planners, and then there are some planner addicts. You need a good planner to stay organized with your day and obligations. I got this Kate Spade planner from my sister-in-law (Hi, Steph!) and I love it. It has ample space to write out your plans for the day but also monthly planning pages at the beginning so you can see your month in a snapshot. It has PLENTY of notes pages so you can jot down whatever it is you’re thinking of. Also, the pages are thick so you won’t have bleed through from
Get some colorful pens. I have these pens. I assign each family member a color. I write whatever the obligation is in their respective color. My To Do list is written in black. My blog stuff in written in either pencil (so I can change things if necessary) or in purple for the concrete deadlines and my personal obligations are written in pink. Color coding helps me find the information I need at a glance so I’m not scanning for forever.
Get your nails done. Do you ever catch yourself doing things like typing, folding laundry, prepping veggies for dinner, or straightening up and you look at your hands and you see how “cute” you look doing said task? Then you continue doing whatever it is you’re doing while admiring your nails? Not everyone can afford to get a weekly or a bi-monthly manicure. Yes, its absolutely relaxing and I love them but thinking about the big picture -- $60/month for a gel mani = $60 of food that I’m not getting in my belly. LOL. I’d much rather sacrifice and paint my nails at home every week. My go to summer/spring colors are Bubble Bath – a light, almost nude pink color by OPI or A-List by Essie - a bright cool red. In the winter, I normally wear a dark color – usually black.
Put some make up on. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a full face beat, but maybe some mascara and eyeliner. This is one of my goals for the month of June. When I do my make up and actually look presentable then I’m more likely to be more productive. I’m less likely to rub my eyes and lay down for a nap because then I’d get make up all over my pillow and I’m more likely to leave the house. Granted, I leave the house even if I’m looking ROUGH with no make up on… but I’m saying I’m more likely to get OUT of my house hah!
Drink your beverage at the proper temperature. So a friend and I had this epiphany. All these people complain about being so busy that they don’t have a chance to drink their coffee or tea while it’s hot. Some of these #momlife mommas are wrangling kids and they can’t enjoy their coffee and they keep putting it in the microwave to reheat it until they forget about it or whatever. Life Hack: Drink your drink from an insulated cup! Taking some time to yourself and drinking your coffee hot will give you a chance to figure out your day and essentially “triage” what you NEED to get done and what you would like to get done.
Drink your beverage of choice in something darling. When you’re drinking your hot coffee or tea, drink it in a cute thermos or mug. I have something similar to this Tervis otherwise I’m drinking out of Harry Potter mugs. I also prefer beer over wine any day. Using a cute koozie like this Harry Potter one will help keep your drink at its proper temperature and make your bottle look adorable while you fold the 3rd load of laundry for the night! I know they say “don’t judge a book by it’s cover” and your drink won’t taste any different if you drank it in a regular mug or a without a koozie, but presentation is everything! You’ll get more done drinking out of something cute, promise!
So those were totally shallow things that help ME be more productive. But here are also not so shallow things that help me get stuff done in the day:
Rewarding myself with a break.
Setting alarms on my phone to stop whatever it is I’m doing and move on to the next thing. I find that I could “get lost” in completing something which then could throw off the rest of my day.
Listening to music while completing certain tasks. Have you ever listened to Poison by Bell Biv De Voe while cleaning? You haven’t? Well you should. Have you ever listened to Poison while trying to write a grad school paper? Well you shouldn’t, because you’d listen and sing to that instead of write your paper.
Complete tasks outside. I’m not saying bring your laundry basket outside and fold clothes on your porch. But if you’re writing a paper or a blog post, do it outside for a change of scenery. Read to your kids outside or have lunch on your stoop! Break up the monotony of being inside.
